about the textile:
The warp wool is local Shropshire wool picked up by bike. It was skirted, scoured and carded in house, by hand. It was dyed with acid dye and drum carded on a Brother drum carder. The yarn is spun long-draw in a semi-worsted style with Z-twist on a Canadian Production spinning wheel built in the 1880s by Fred Bordua of Saint Hyacinthe Quebec. It is plied S-twist on an Ashford Traveller wheel.
The overall yarn is a sport weight yarn, approximately 12 wpi (wraps per inch). It is set at 8 epi (ends per inch) on a Woodhouse table loom. The loom is 8 shaft, but the weaving pattern is a 4- shaft Bronson Spot pattern from xx book.
The weft is the same Shropshire, combined with about 10% local alpaca, also picked up by bike. It is a blend of approximately 5 colours- orange, charcoal, green and two colours of blue, plus the alpaca, which is black. It is spun long-draw in a woolen style, to maximize the loft of the yarn. It is also Z-spun and S-plied.
The weft is set in a balanced weave at 8 ppi (picks per inch).
